Comprehension Questions

1. Bradley had been held back in fourth grade. How do you think this affects his behavior and self-image? What do you think the pros and cons of repeating grade levels in school are?

2. Bradley plays with his animal figurines at home, imagining they come to life. How do the scenes where he plays with them fit in with what's going on in his life? Is there any symbolism in these scenes? If so, what is it?

3. Review Bradley and Jeff Fishkin's friendship. Explore why it started and its ups and downs. At one point, they walk to class "side by side but not necessarily together." What does that mean?

4. In Bradley's first meeting with the counselor, Carla, there is some foreshadowing that, despite their unfavorable beginning, they will get along. Can you cite some examples of this foreshadowing?

5. After Melinda hits Bradley and gives him a black eye, why does Jeff let the other fifth-grade boys believe that it was actually he who gave Bradley the bruise? What are his motivations for this lie?

6. Carla is very unlike the teachers in her interactions with Bradley. Outline some of the differences -- and why you think they occur. Carla always believes Bradley - even if he lies. Why do you think she does this?

7. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me." How does this saying apply to the different characters in this novel?

8. In a discussion of monsters from outer space, Carla tells Bradley: "They call him a monster, and other people start calling him a monster, and everyone treats him like a monster, and then after a while, he starts believing it himself. He thinks he's a monster too. So he acts like one. But he still isn't a monster. He still has lots of good, buried deep inside him." Do you think Bradley understands the symbolism in this statement? Support your opinion with Bradley's words and/or actions.

9. In his sessions with Carla, Bradley draws pictures. Compare the picture he draws in his first session with her to the picture of the green monster with a heart. How are these signs of the change Bradley is going through?

10. Bradley has asked what to do about his problems in an advice column in your school paper. Write his letter and then helpful advice as the newspaper editor.

11. Draw what you would give Bradley as a birthday gift. Write a paragraph below it explaining why your gift is from the heart.
